Category: Geeks r Us
OK, well yesterday someone posted a topic in here about an easter-egg that can be found in jaws/window eyes, and stupid me decided that I would have a go of following instructions. so all this stuff about going into dos prompts typing all these commands, resorted in me, not knowing what I was doing, and for whatever reason, my computer died and wouldn't boot up. turned out it was missing the ntldr file which is a boot up file for windows xp. Basically we had to reinstall windows right from scratch. I've lost all my precious audio files that took me years to collect (even from when I first started on the net). lost all my programs; will have to get them back; obviously some will be easier than others, depending on registration/s..
I am not sure if this problem was the cause of a plain old hoax, or me attempting to get into something I have no idea about, so technically I can't point a finger, (Lol) what I will say though, is learn from me and don't do anything with your puter unless you absolutely are sure what you're doing, especially when it comes to mucking around with deep windows files, shelling into dos! always ask before you do!
If this was a hoax, I will find out and won't be happy! if not, then course I take it back and say to you .. thank you but no thanks any more!
stupid jaws takes some tweequing to even read properly with xp. I can't remember how! *sigh* I will have to be patient. what's that?
So if two of you made the mistake I'm sort of leaning to the fact that it was a hoax. But liek Rachel I'm not gonna point fingers. SO yah if you don't know what you're doing...Don't. Lol.

it would seem that the commands that this guy gave actually erase all the directories from your hard drive so anybody who has the instructions? don't do it
I didn't even bother to read that when it was up, but I can't believe someone would post that knowing that people who are not computer geeks would play around with it thinking it was a "real game!"
I also saw that the person put that up twice don't know if that was intentionally done or not, but nevertheless, I'm glad it was removed!
I must admit, I tryed it and I'm glad it didn't work. My PC is still the same.
the user who has posted it was banned for life. Even after we contacted him, he pretended not to know what it did. the rd command in dos is short for remove directory. I wish I had caught this sooner. I feel really bad for anyone who was effected by this. please except my apologies. If something is ever posted like this in the future, please let me or another community leader know imedietly. I don't want to see anyone else fall for this kind of trick. it's really disgusting.
yep a friend told me earlier about deltre. apparently it changes the string of text on you that you think you are typing! .. Thanks for banning him!
Well, i did some research on the command-line parameters for the rd command in dos on Google, and the person who posted this put a period at the end of his last command, which tells the system to delete all directories under the current subdirectory. Basically what the guy was saying is, go into the root directory of your hard drive and then issue the command that makes your puter go bye-bye. Luckly, my life was saved because I have Symantec's Norton GoBack software installed, which is a system restore utility that takes snapshots of your hard drive every few minutes or so. So, after falling for this trick, I was able to restore my hard drive back to the way it was in a matter of about 45 seconds, going from a hard disk drive that was basically almost empty back to a drive with about 130 GB of stuff on it. I'd highly recommend that people purchase GoBack; it's saved my life a countless number of times. Just do a search on Google for it.

Omg what a freaking loser that guy is. Gah. And Liam, don't feel bad, it's hardly your fault. You can't catch everything. I'm just glad I was too lazy to bother typing the whole thing in. I tried pasting it. Thank God it didn't work, and then I was like, "Ah won't bother, it's probably stupid anyway." Plus, I dunno, i just had this feeling the guy was weird, cuz he private QNed me asking if I'd gotten it to work yet. SO yeah. What a freak...gah...evil people like that make me mad. Poor Rachel and Brice.

Props to yall for banning the idiot, he's no better than all those individuals who would crash jaws with the c...word, in fact what he did was detestable, and that's putting it mildly. Glad I have my music on an external 120gb drive, and that's not on most of the time anyway, but to all who were burnt by this stupidity, I feel your pain.
yeah i got a 300 gb drive. although if i saw anything like that i'd ask a sorce that i trusted if it was a legit thing or not first. i always do that.
hey b, yes have heard a lot about these sorts of programs today. they sound like a good idea! :)
That is utterly purile I wonder at the fecker's mentality or lack of it..
This is waaay worse than the C word, I'll grant you, cuz the C word doesnt' erase anythign I don't think. But yeah. Along the same lins...Messing with our screenreaders, ya know. Lol.
I wonder if it was the eejit known as Zonef.ker...hmm they should hand him over and let us have our way..
Aw sorry about that Brice, that's definitely not cool. Gah. Stupid reak. Nah he didn't sound like the ABC Loser, Gob. But you never know. Maybe he's being sneaky.
I thought he was kinda normal when I saw his name on here. .. know what "thought" did?! Lol
yes this is zonefucker heheheheheheheheh goblin and caitlan got something right in their lives for once
It does work you feckers... yes you will screw up your comp if you don't do it right, so if you don't know how to follow directions well then too bad!
Johny
That command is incapable of causing sounds to play. It will only erase directories from your drive. Play at your own risk.
bye bye potter fan. mmm. I love banning people who are ass tools
he keeps signing on as different names. so there may be more trouble yet ...
yes but he wants to be found. so getting rid of him shouldn't be a problem
ya. he was an idiot and got another account. We'll be keeping our eyes peeled
Well, just in general, don't ever ever do anything to your computer if you have no idea what you are doing, Google is full of instructions for every command and program you can imagine, do a search on there first on what your command does. It's just like never ever open an attachemnt in an email unless you are expecting it, not even from a person you trust, the attachment could be sent without that person's knowledge. Sadly enough this has become commonsense knowledge, it shouldn't be, people shouldn't have to watch out for this but the fact is somehow people are amused by doing these things or stand to gain something from it so if you are online you must develop a suspicious attitude towards any software installation or manipulting that is suggested to you. This especially applies to scripts or dos commands as the computer will not give you any warning.
cheers

My sympathy goes out to zone users who followed the hoax's instructions. For future reference, if a zone user wants to play an audio file in dos, simply search for and download a dos sound player, a couple come to mind. also, dos is more dangerous than windows because normally there is no confirmation when you are about to make a critical computer change. so, if you want to go into dos, be extra, extra careful. For those unfamiliar with dos, the safe commands I recommend using are dir for a directory list and chdir, for change directory. anyway, be careful on the computer, whether you have windows or dos loaded. Just my thoughts.

Firstly, sorry to all the people that got done by this.
I love dos, and when i was learning, i didn't find the commands hard to understand at all.
I mean, del, format copy i mean... don't they just talk for them selves?
Rd perhaps is a lil harder, but think, what does it stand for?
I always use rm dir.
And i think that on the whole dos does prompt you before you do something stupid?
Ok, well maybe not del, but really, you shoodn't be fiddling in the root of your drive or your windows folder etc etc.
The only way i can make dos not prompt me before i do something silly is format c: /y >nul, but doesn't that speak for its self again?
BEN.
And potter fan 1988 was right, they need to update the posting system to support line brakes.

Wow I didn't know there was another way to format or delete stuff off your computer in dos....... Thats starnge though. Really folks it's called common sense. I gotta qoute off it's like attachments you get from people you don't know. You don't open them and if you do, you risk getting something bad in return. ESPECAILLY DOS. Hell I don't go into Dos unless necessary. I rarely play the dos games now because after a while they crash my entire system. So I never did the egg thingy nor will I. So I hope those who lost most of their windows files can get them back, thats gotta be a pain in the ass to get some of that stuff back.
good thing i got some stuff back. i just got my system back last night and also fell for that idiotic post. I'm just wondering what does /s /q . mean? I've been wondering that since i unfortunately did that easter thing thingy.
Not only would I recommend using the tools that come with windowsXP, but I have a second harddrive for storing all important stuff on. That goes for copies of the program installers that I want to keep and that I've downloaded from the Net. But, you don't have to go through the expense of a secondary harddrive; you can get rewritable cd's and/or dvd's depending on what kinda burner you have; if any. There is also jump drives and so much more that you can use to keep all important data on.
Omg, seriously... You guys really take the advice of some random without asking anyone else? Not saying you deserve to have what happened happen to you, but that was kinda silly wasn't it? Oops, just made me a whole load of new friends didn't i. lol
OK Sugar, we know.
